The Montebello Unified School District places great importance on healthy living and making smart food choices. Each School Site is asked to form a Nutritional Advisory Council (NAC) which is comprised of one teacher and a group of students. Students who participate on NAC assist in planning balanced school lunch menus, sampling healthy food choices and spreading the word about the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
Each year, the California Nutritional Advisory Council holds a art contest where students are encouraged to express their thoughts, ideas and feelings regarding nutrition in a visual way. This year's theme was "Gear Up" for eating healthy. Students throughout the entire state of California submitted artistic pieces that addressed and promoted this theme.
Two winners were chosen from all student entries, and Calvin Kamimura, a Macy Sixth-Grader was chosen as one of the State's winners. Calvin's art really took the "Gear Up" message to heart, as he created a beautiful piece that merged healthy food choices into physical activity. In recognition of this tremendous accomplishment, Calvin received an award from the California Nutritional Advisory Council, a NAC T-Shirt, and a check for $75.00. Principal Arregui, Ms. Lazaro (NAC Advisor) and Ms. Thayer from our District Office presented Calvin with his awards. Additionally, Calvin's art work was featured in "Poppy Seeds", which is the California Child Nutrition's monthly periodical.
The Macy Knights community is extremely proud of Calvin's accomplishments and commitment to good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. Please join us in congratulating and celebrating Calvin's prestigious award!
